DIETERS SHOULD EAT APPLES TO LOSE WEIGHT
New York apple growers are encouraging dieters to eat multiple New York-grown apples every day to help drop weight.
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but three apples a day make the pounds go away,” said Linda Quinn, a registered dietitian and a spokeswoman for the New York Apple Association.
Apples are loaded with pectin, a soluble fiber that aids in digestion. One apple provides as much dietary fiber as a bowl of bran cereal. Also, apples contain zero fat or cholesterol. Three apples a day can help fill a person up and slim them down by replacing other foods in a diet, Quinn said.
Based on research, people who eat higher amounts of fruits and vegetables are more likely to obtain and maintain their ideal weight, she said. “If you’re looking to downsize your waistline and give your health a boost, apples are your answer,” Quinn said. New York State has 674 commercial apple growers. The state ranks second nationally in apple production with 24.5 million bushels harvested annually.
